Nicholas Kirkwood garbage shoes lookalike, the Topshop Petula

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Fans of MTV’s The City will surely remember those standout Nicholas Kirkwood garbage bag shoes (pictured above) that were featured in the episode where Olivia Palermo helped style pop star Kei$ha for Elle.  While I’m not sure where these shoes can be purchased (or for how much), I couldn’t help but immediately think of them when I came across this pair:

The Petula Rose Platform Sandal isn’t what I would call a knockoff, but it certainly appears to be inspired by Nicholas Kirkwood and is presumably way more affordable.  There’s no mention of the floral accents being crafted from actual garbage bags, which unfortunately eliminates the “green” recycled factor of the Kirkwood pair, but the frayed roses do convey a very similar look.  Plus, the neutral colors make this style much more wearable while still retaining the overall drama factor.  I’m loving it and, if you love this pair too, you can find the Petula at Topshop for $200.  It’s still a splurge, but definitely a fun one.  Shipping adds a flat rate of $15.

Shoes from MTV The Hills finale: Kristin, Lauren, Audrina, Lo & more

Friday, July 16th, 2010

We bid farewell to the cast of MTV’s The Hills this week during their final episode and the after-show The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending, which brought together the entire cast – even Lauren Conrad, but not Spencer and Heidi, who disappeared off the show earlier this season with no real explanation of where they went (besides Crazy Town, that is).  But, it was quite bittersweet for the show to be over and I, for one, actually liked the ending – the final scene where Brody and Kristin are saying their final goodbyes to each other after Kristin decides she’s moving to Europe.

The background – which appeared to be a real outdoor locale in front of the landmark Hollywood sign – was pulled away and revealed to be a backdrop in the lot of a studio.  Then the cameras pan out to show all the behind-the-scenes action of the show: the cameras, the crew and the breaking down of the last scene.  Apparently, some people didn’t like the ending, but I appreciated the unexpected nod to all the speculation on whether the show was real or fake and the acknowledgement that it wasn’t all reality.  I think most viewers knew it was scripted – at least to some degree – and, let’s face it, a little drama engineering does wonders for the entertainment factor.  Of course, another part of the show’s appeal was checking out the fashion.  So, for my last The Hills shoes post, I’ll be checking out what designer shoes the ladies wore to the aftershow and, in the spirit of this blog, find lookalikes that cost much less.

The cast looked gorgeous at the finale and I had to notice that it was actually the dresses that took center stage this time around – no statement shoes that stole the show for the most part – but they wore the kind of shoes every girl should have in their closet: sexy platform heels in go-with-everything neutrals that serve to complement, not compete with, the entire look.  Let’s start with Kristin Cavallari:

I absolutely love Kristin Cavallari’s dress from The Hills finale, which is by Zuhair Murad and she paired it with Christian Louboutin Turbella 120 silver pumps, which were available at Net-A-Porter, but are now sold out.  I don’t see them for sale online anywhere else, but get a similar look with these:

Nine West Every in dark or light silver for $29.95 (MSRP $78.95) at 6pm, plus 7 more color options (prices vary).

Aldo Debellis for $75 at Aldo.  Coupon code 175926112 takes 10% off and shipping adds $5 unless your order is over $75.  The expiration of the code is 7/31/10.

Lauren “LC” Conrad may have exited the show before the final season, but she was back to celebrate during the finale and rumor has it that her taupe suede pumps are Aldo, specifically the Aldo Fawson for $49.98 at  These are already affordable but, not surprisingly, close to being sold out in this color.  For more neutral suede heel options, check these out:

Nine West Marray for $88.95 with free overnight shipping at Endless.  Spend at least $100 on qualifying back-to-school styles (this pair qualifies) and get an extra $20 off for a limited time.

Steve Madden Ultamit in taupe with berry colored sole on preorder at Steve Madden for $79.95 with free shipping using coupon code SMFREESHIP at checkout.

Whitney Port left The Hills for The City, but she definitely had a statement to make at the finale…with her shoes, that is.  Whitney nixed neutrals in favor of a bold and colorful cage style that had Jimmy Choo written all over it.  It’s the Jimmy Choo Quito multicolored snakeskin bootie and it appears to be sold out everywhere online.  These more affordable pairs convey a similar look:

Michael Antonio Jeana for $55.95 with free overnight shipping at Endless.

Aldo Storino on sale for $64.98 (regularly $90) at Aldo.  Get 10% off using coupon code 175926112 and shipping adds $5 unless your order is over $75.  The expiration of the code is 7/31/10.

Pour La Victoire Bethanie 1 in teal for $137.17 with free shipping at Amazon.

Audrina Patridge dared to bare plenty of skin at the finale in her tight purple cutout Boulee Ciara dress, which you can preorder at Singer22 in fuschia or black for $198 (she’s actually wearing it backwards), and her black peep toe pumps.  Her shoes are identified by Coolspotters as the Brian Atwood Wagner, but I can’t find the exact pair online.  However, we always have more black peep toe pumps on the market and here’s a couple that I like for less:

Steve Madden Flawwles for $98.95 with free shipping at Shoebuy.  Get 20% off with coupon code SUMMER at checkout (expiration unknown).  Update: There’s only a couple sizes left, but 6pm has this pair on sale for $39.98 (sale price expiration unknown).

Paris Hilton Sashay in black for $69.30 at 6pm.

Lo Bosworth looked fetching in her white dress and her Christian Louboutin Mille heels completed her sophisticated look.  Get the exact shoes at Barney’s for $895 or spend less on something similar, like these:

Boutique 9 Disco for $79.99 at Nine West or for $96 at 6pm.

Stephanie Pratt pairs platform slingback YSL Tribtoo heels, similar to this one from Saks that is now sold out, with her skintight Herve Leger dress.  Here’s a lookalike option from Bebe:

Bebe Neve in black, blue or pink for $149 at Bebe.

Another option is the Zigi Project Pumped heel in blue or black at Bakers for $79.95.

Holly Montag wore a pretty white feather dress and closed toe black patent heels.  I’m taking a guess on her shoes, which could be Christian Louboutin, Miu Miu, the Pour La Victoire Irina or none of the above (it’s hard to tell).  However, this pair is a nice option for less:

Aldo Moos for $54.98 – $75 depending on option selected.  Coupon code 175926112 takes 10% off and shipping adds $5 unless your order is over $75.  The expiration of the code is 7/31/10.

So, with that, we say goodbye to the cast of The Hills and all of the rumors, the drama, the black mascara tears, the boyfriend stealing, the name calling and cat fights, the voodoo crystals and plastic surgery, the lingering facial expressions, the ending and beginning of friendships – all of it – and, of course, the shoes.

Shoe Buzz from The City & The Hills: Kristin Cavallari shoe line & more

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Think MTV’s The City and The Hills are all about the catfights and the drama?  Well, think again, because it’s all about the shoes, ladies.  Cute shoes make regular appearances on both shows and, if you’re like me, you like to watch just to see the latest styles the cast is wearing, both on-screen and off.  Need more evidence?  I’ve gathered some from the episodes that just aired this week:

Exhibit A: Kristin Cavallari shoes line Kristin tells those quirky kids, Dan and Jessi, on this week’s MTV Aftershow that she would love to have a shoe line and that she’s been looking into it, although nothing is set in stone as of yet.  But, here on, she talks about life after The Hills, which is in its last season, and says that she is designing a shoe line and she also has plans in the works to produce three reality shows.  Sure, it is another celebrity doing the fashion thing, but Kristin has admitted to being obsessed with shoes before and she has an enviable designer shoe collection to draw inspiration from, so who can blame her for trying?  I know I would!

Exhibit B: Goth shoes & garbage shoes Over on The City, Olivia helps style pop star Kei$ha, who’s a fan of “garbage couture”, for Elle and outfits her in these Nicholas Kirkwood “trash bag” shoes that feature floral blooms made of actual garbage bags.  These are very cool shoes, but I couldn’t find any additional details about them online.  However, the real fun was watching Olivia scout for shoes at goth shop Trash and Vaudeville before she secured the Kirkwood pair.  I find Olivia best when she’s out of her element, like that time she played investigative reporter by hunting for counterfeit designer handbags on Canal Street, and this store was certainly not her usual stomping ground.  Here’s the play by play:

Olivia was initially gunning for a silver glitter platform pump.  But her idea was nixed and they made her try on a boot with bullets instead:

These are so un-Olivia and she refused to walk around in them, which some store employees found amusing:

After all of that, the shoes they picked at the store weren’t approved for the shoot, but the Nicholas Kirkwood pair Olivia found ended up being a hit.  While the Kirkwood shoes were the star of the show, we did see a cameo from another hot pair:

Exhibit C: JC Tick appearance It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment (sorry for the blurry pic), but the Jeffrey Campbell Tribal Tick isn’t the kind of shoe that blends into its environment, so I definitely recognized it in the scene that took place in the Elle accessories closet.

You can get the Jeffrey Campbell Tick tribal at Eilatan for $142.79.  Singer22 also has them for $264.  Update: You can get them again at Karmaloop now that they are back in stock.

Exhibit D: Whitney wears Payless Whitney Port of The City is being featured in People’s 50 Hottest Bodies issue and even though she’s normally spotted in expensive designer footwear, she dons a pair from Payless in the spread.

It’s the Alice + Olivia for Payless Breckenridge bow sandal and I think it’s adorable.  There are only a couple sizes left online for $39.99, but you can always inquire in your local store for more availability.

Exhibit E: Olivia apparently goes cheap-chic sometimes too Our fave ice-queen Olivia made an appearance at the 2010 Institute for Civic Leadership spring benefit looking light and bright in her floral DVF top, shorts and the coral shoes pictured above (see the entire look on MTV’s Remote Control Blog).  Although Olivia usually favors high-end designers, her shoes appear to be these heels from Aldo (unless these are inspired by another pair):

This is the Aldo Starace in peach and it’s available at for $90.  Get another 10% off with coupon code 175926229 until 7/31/10 and shipping is also free for a limited time.

Shoes Whitney Port wore to Sex & the City 2 premier & MTV Movie Awards

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

On this season of MTV’s The City, we’ve seen Whitney Port hard at work on her Whitney Eve clothing line and she’s definitely had her share of success – like showing her designs at Bryant Park during Fashion Week and scoring deals with companies like Rue La La and Maybelline – but we’ve also seen her endure some criticism from the fashion world and fellow unsupportive castmate Olivia, whose fate at Elle is definitely hanging by a thread at this point (leaving anticipation high for a potential firing).  But, we all know that looking fabulous is the best revenge and Whitney did just that while attending the MTV Movie Awards and the premier of Sex and the City 2.  I love both of these looks on her and, of course, I had to notice the shoes.  At first glance, I thought her SATC 2 shoes (with the black dress) might be the Christian Louboutin Coussin, but a closer look revealed them to be this pair:

This is the Charlie My Love ATM Knotted Woven Bootie and it’s available at Shopbop for $268.80, marked down from $384.  That’s certainly a lot less than the $1,595 Louboutin bootie, but you can save some money and get a similar look with this pair:

Boutique 9 Val for $199 at Shoe Woo.  If you buy 2 pairs, get 20% off automatically at checkout until 6/14/10.

Or, save even more with the N.Y.L.A. Isabel bootie in black, which is $76.98 at Target.

On to the next pair:

Whitney reaffirms her love for the cage at the MTV Movie Awards by pairing her yellow dress with bronze Sergio Rossi Scalloped Booties, which are available at Neiman Marcus for $850.  For less expensive alternatives, try these:

Calvin Klein Dylan for $119 at  Get 20% off with coupon code VISA for a limited time, which reduces them to $95.20 with free shipping.

Mixx Chloe 01 for $44 at LuLu’s.

Martinez Valero Courtney for $96.22 with free 2-day shipping at Endless.

Update: This Cut-Out High Heel Bootie scallop cage shoe for $40 at GoJane is even more similar.  It comes in purple, grey or black.

Shoe Buzz: Shoes inspired by Whitney Port from MTV The City promos

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

The cast of The City has returned for Season 2 of the MTV show (technically Season 3, but whatevs) and, as always, I’ve got an eye on these ladies’ style, particularly their cute shoes.  We haven’t seen any of those shoe close-up shots they’re known to do on the show so far (after the first two episodes anyway), but I do know that some people are interested in the shoes worn in the promo pics for the show.  They definitely have some standout pairs going on in these photos and I’ve attempted to find out which shoes they are and lookalike versions that are also hot, but cost a fraction of the price.  Here’s what I found for Whitney:

Whit looks really amazing in this shot.  She’s got legs for miles and they end with one of the hottest designer shoes of the moment, the Fendi Cinderella:

Fendi somehow manages to make a huge clear platform heel look, well, classy and  Whitney is donning a gorgeous light blue version of this frothy concoction.  There were many colors featured in the Fendi Spring 2010 show, but the only one I’ve seen for sale is the blush version at Net-A-Porter.  It’s $1,195 and nearly sold out.  There’s also an alternate version of the Fendi Cinderella at Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,140, but it’s almost sold out as well.

Now, it’s not an easy thing to find anything that remotely resembles this shoe.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see a knockoff at some point, as we usually do, but I haven’t seen anything so far.  However, I did find some shoes that incorporate some of the elements of this pair resulting in a similar look:

The Bebe Scarlett Scarf Sandal reminds me of the Fendi sandal more than anything else I’ve seen, even though the colors are bold and bright rather than subtle and soft (it would still rock with a white outfit like Whitney’s though).  It comes in black or pink at Bebe for $179, but unfortunately they are almost sold out.  However, they do re-stock styles from time to time, so hopefully we’ll see it available in more sizes again.

The Touch Ups Celine Heel is available in black or silver for the base and it comes with four different multicolored scarves so you can change up your look.  You can get these for $69.99 at Shoebuy and coupon code MOM takes 20% off for a limited time, making them $55.96 with free shipping.

The Colin Stuart Canvas Lace-Up Sandal is sold at Victoria’s Secret for $68.

The pretty Zigi Soho Fabulous in black is dramatic and airy, making it a viable alternative for the Fendi pair.  Get it at Journey’s for $49.99.  You can also check out the somewhat similar and even less expensive Patent Ruffle Lace Heel at GoJane for just $21.80.  It comes in a wider variety of color options.

Update: I ran across the Aldo Nelton and it also reminds me somewhat of the black Fendi Cinderella in wedge form, minus the super-high clear platform of course.  It’s $80 at

Update 2: Check out these shoes from Bakers for more options: The Scarfy WP (pictured above) for $59.99 in ivory or black, the Star for $49.99 in black or the Tonya for $49.99 in orange, turquoise, white or multi.

Whitney also rocks a good-girl-gone-bad look in another promo photo, which features the Giuseppe Zanotti Zip Cuffed Jewel Sandal, available at Neiman Marcus for $1,360 or Zappos for the same price.  Here are some similarly sexy looks for less:

ZiGiny Erratic for $199.95 with free 2-day shipping at Endless.  Update:  Here are a couple more lookalikes for this pair that are much more affordable, the Black Strappy Stud Ankle Heel at Americlubwear for $25.99 and the Celeste Yama-10 Jeweled Open Toe Sandal at Urban Originals for $28.90.

Nine West Inquisat for $129 at  Get 20% off at checkout until 5/9/10, which drops them to $103.20.  They ship 5/18/10.

ALDO Tinder in black for $69.98 at, reduced from $90.  It also comes in beige for $59.98.  Use coupon code FSNEWMAY10 for free shipping.

ZiGiny Gaga for $53.95 at Karmaloop.  Apply coupon code CLINTON to take 20% off, making them $43.16 (list price $180) plus shipping.  That’s the best price I see, but sizes are limited.  Amazon also has them for $77 with free shipping.

Of course, we also have the cage heel Whitney wears in the intro of The City, during the opening credits where she’s stepping out of a taxi cab.  This promo was shot quite some time ago and the shoe may have been the Dolce Vita Cher, which basically isn’t available any longer, but luckily this kind of caged, ghillie tie style is still popular and available from other brands. Here are a few I’ve seen:

Chinese Laundry Lucky Strike for $80 at  Apply coupon code MOMSAVE20 for 20% off, making them $64 with free shipping.  The coupon expires 5/9/10.

Nine West Jemmia for $89 at  They qualify for an extra 30% off and an extra 20% off at checkout until 5/9/10, which reduces them to $49.84 with $5 extra for shipping.

GoJane Laced-Up Cage Heel for $22.60.

Finally, we have the shoes Whitney wore for her Whitney Eve fashion show in Bryant Park.  According to Whitney’s blog, her outfit is Whitney Eve and the shoes are from Lanvin. It looks like this Lanvin high-heeled sandal for $430 at YOOX, but this one is in black and only one size is left.  Here are some alternatives:

Betsey Johnson Gemma in gold leather for $86.25 at 6pm.

Luichiny Gal Lop in champagne for $45.87 at Amazon.

Nina Clova in gold satin for $79 at  Coupon code MOMSAVE20 takes 20% off until 5/9/10, making them $63.20 with free shipping.

Next time, I’ll talk about more shoes from Erin, Olivia and Roxy from The City, plus shoes from MTV’s The Hills.

Anne Michelle Fume: A look-alike for Whitney Port’s black heels on MTV’s The City

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Any shoe lover who considers themselves a fan of MTV’s The City with Whitney Port has to remember those infamous black ankle strap heels Whitney wore in the first season of the show (check out all my posts on Whitney Port’s shoes for more).  I definitely wasn’t searching for a look-alike pair today, but I happened across the Anne Michelle Fume and instantly recognized them as very similar to the style Whitney wore on the show.  It’s also a dead ringer for the Steve Madden Tayla, but the Anne Michelle pair is much more affordable.  You can get this hot look at LuLu’s for just $26.50 in black or grey.  If you spend over $75 on your order, shipping is also free.

Shoe Buzz: Shoes worn by Erin Kaplan on MTV’s The City

Friday, December 11th, 2009

As you may know, I’ve been following the shoes worn on MTV’s The City ever since the show started (yes, I’m a bit shoe obsessed!).  There have been plenty of notable pairs on the fashion-centric show, not the least of which are those worn by new cast member Erin Kaplan.  Erin, who is the youngest-ever Director of PR at Elle, spent the season on an entirely new career challenge – working alongside nemesis Oliva Polermo while trying to keep her sanity intact.  She also demonstrated her own brand of personal style, which includes super-short skirts, statement shoes and plenty of studs and spikes for good measure.  Her shoe picks?  The Christian Louboutin Very Prive, the Report Signature Masonic and this pair:

In this shoe close-up, we see Erin walking on a sidewalk in New York and heading for work in a black lace-up platform statement heel (excuse the fuzzy picture).  I couldn’t locate this pair at first – it can be hard to do when the episodes are usually filmed several months prior to airing – but I came across the ALDO Stolinski while perusing ALDO’s clearance section.  This actually turned out to be good timing because they are reduced an additional 30% during their sale this weekend and you can get them in black or bone for $69.99.  It certainly looks like the same shoe Erin wore – or at least one that’s very similar.
