Spring 2011 Hot Shoe Trends: Denim shoes

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Lately, I’ve noticed that many shoe designers seem to be catching a case of the blues — but in the best possible way, of course, because what I’m referring to is a spring denim trend.  Blue jeans are always a closet staple, but this trend is all about the use of denim for other types of clothing and accessories, such as shoes.  And like your favorite pair of jeans, shoes in denim have the potential for some serious multitasking in any wardrobe due to the versatility of the fabric.  It also tends to exude a cool, casual vibe perfect for toning down a look and making it more laid-back, which works well when this is the desired effect.  I first observed this trend emerging when Mr. Louboutin released shoes in denim for the upcoming season, like the drool-worthy Christian Louboutin Pigalle 120 studded denim pumps pictured above for $975 at Net-a-Porter (almost sold out) and more styles, like the Christian Louboutin Greissimo in denim for $875 and the Christian Louboutin Deroba Denim Wedge for $595 at Neiman Marcus.  Plus, as Fashionologie reports, denim pieces were seen all over the runway for several noted designers and, in addition, we have the lovely Rachel Roy, who recently released an array of denim shoes as part of her Rachel Rachel Roy line.  If you want to get in on the denim shoe trend, here are some styles to check out:

This is one of my current favorite shoes and it’s available in a limited-edition denim version exclusively at Akira: the Sam Edelman Lorissa for $183.90.  Update: This pair is now also available at Nordstrom for $225.

Update: Here’s another one from Sam Edelman and I had to add it because I am soooo loving it.  The Sam Edelman Novato in light blue for $90 at Lori’s Shoes or $99.95 at Nordstrom.

The Fever Monica in bleached denim for $200 at Fever Shoes.

The Rachel Roy Idana for $99.99 at Macy’s.  Apply code PRESIDENT to get 10% off, making them $89.99, through 2/21/11.  I’m also hoping the Rachel Roy Kimi in light blue with red glitter platform might make a comeback after being sold out - love!!

The Jeffrey Campbell Hill Boot in blue denim for $220 at Karmaloop.  Coupon code JUST4U takes 20% off for a limited time, making them $176.

The Miss Me Woody-5 for $54.10 at Endless.

The Sergio Zelcer Witt for $136.32 in limited sizes at Endless.  See all Sergio Zelcer for more denim styles.

The Dr. Scholl’s Bombshell denim flat for $29 at Endless.

The Matisse Slade for $34.98 at 6pm or $32.49 at Sears.

The Guess Bilsor in limited sizes for $76.97 at 6pm.

Shoes from the Super Bowl: Christina Aguilera in Louboutin, Fergie’s boots & Kim’s Shape-Ups

Monday, February 7th, 2011

I’m not that into football, generally speaking, but I do find the Super Bowl entertaining.  It’s a great excuse to eat something extra-yummy and one of the only times I ever pay attention to commercials, plus I like to see who performs the national anthem and the half-time show.  The actual game?  Meh.  But, this year, I had to take note of the shoes that took part in the big event (and not just football cleats).  Here’s what was on my radar:

Christina Aguilera has been catching major flack around the web for flubbing the lyrics while performing the national anthem pre-game, but she did score points for her choice of footwear.  She wore the fab Christian Louboutin Calypso pumps, seen here at Coolspotters.  These crystal-encrusted beauties are gorgeous, but appear to be unavailable online.  For something affordable and somewhat similar in look overall, try these:

The Penny Loves Kenny Tetra for $89.99 with free shipping at Heels.com.  It also comes in several other color options (no red), some of which are very limited in size options.

The Paris Hilton Electra in black/black or black/brown on sale for $62.30 (regularly $89) at Macys.  The same style is also available in three color options at Heels.com for $89.99.

Fergie rocked out with the Black Eyed Peas during half time in these tall lace-up wedge boots, a look that was football inspired, as noted on the Fergie Shoes Facebook page.  Despite some sound issues, which always seem to be prevalent given the acoustics at stadiums, I enjoyed the show.  I’m not sure of the designer of her boots, but here’s another pair that has many of the same elements, minus the white-colored laces:

The Type Z Nora boot in black or brown on sale for $90.30 (MSRP $169) at 6pm.

Of course, you can always look to Fergie’s own shoe line for some rocker inspiration.  The Fergie Battlefield over-the-knee boot is available for $99 (regularly $159) at Fergie Shoes.

Finally, we have Kim Kardashian, who hawked for Skechers Shape-Ups during the Super Bowl commercials in one of her latest product endorsements.  Is it just me, or does it seem like the overtly sexual ad may have spoken more to the male audience rather than the intended female target for the shoes she was wearing?  I’m also not sure that Kim has ever worn these kind of shoes in real life, rather than utilizing a hot personal trainer, but whatevs.  If you want to find her black and pink Shape-Ups from the commercial, you can get a good price at Endless.  The Shape Ups Kinetix Response is on sale for $60 (regularly $100) with free 2-day shipping, but it has pink shoe laces rather than black.  You can also get the Skechers Shape-Ups SRT Kinetix with black laces, as in the ad, for $99.99 at Famous Footwear.

I heart these Valentine’s Day shoes in pink & red

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Valentine’s Day is coming up and I, for one, am already feeling the love - the shoe love, that is.  When it comes to what you wear on the day, anything goes, but it’s one of those holidays that tends to bring out our romantic side.  For shoes, that can translate into anything from sweet and girly to fiercely seductive - depending on the desired effect - but with plenty of feminine details.  And if you really want to get into the V-day spirit, you wear the classic team colors of pink and red.  That’s why I’ve gathered up a selection of shoes that I think are perfect for the day.  But, before I get into that, you’re probably wondering about the shoes pictured above, right?  An image of these dramatic platforms popped up in the shopping results while I was doing a search on Google and I had to post the pic because they are just so…heart-tastic.  Then I found out they are sold by a site that specializes in selling shoes for dancers (ok, strippers).  But if you want to know where to get them, they are sold for $199.95 at a site appropriately called Booty Cocktails (lol) and they are actually hand-carved and custom made with each order.  Admittedly, I think they are pretty cool, but obviously very extreme.  If you want to express your Valentine’s Day cheer in a much more subtle way, here are some more options:

The Paris Hilton Senorita in red with rhinestone bow for $89 at Macy’s.  Or, get the red patent version without rhinestones for $95 at Shoes.com.  Coupon code VISA takes 20% off to drop the total to $76 with free shipping (exp. 6/30, may require Visa payment).  A soft pink version is for sale at 6pm for $53.37.

The Chinese Laundry Hot Hot glitter heels in a whisper-soft shade of blush for $69.95 with free shipping at Zappos.

Poetic Licence Dance All Night in red for $104.27 with free shipping at Zappos.

Jessica Simpson Ely in powder for $98 with free shipping at Piperlime.

Steve Madden Propperr in red for $99.95 at Steve Madden.  Coupon code rmn15f takes another 15% off and adds free shipping, making them $84.96.

The Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + Melissa Lady Dragon IV in pink on sale for $126 at 6pm.

Sam Edelman Jewel for $99 with free shipping at Shoes.com.  Coupon code VISA drops the price to $79.20 (exp. 6/30, may require Visa payment).

Charles by Charles David Froth for $125.95 with free shipping at Zappos.

For something more casual, there’s the Comme Des Garcons Play Converse with heart, available for $105 at Tobi.

Finally, you have to check these out just for fun: The Minimy Lipstick Bootie features a heart buckle and a heel that looks like a tube of lipstick.  Alberto Guardiani did something similar that retailed for around $400, but these are just $19.98 at Amazon, marked down from $59.99.  Few sizes are left.

Update: Here’s another pretty pair, Qupid Gaze chiffon heels for $36 at LuLu’s.

Here’s to plenty of shoe love for Valentine’s Day!

Have a Dorothy moment in Rachel Roy Kimi red glitter heels

Monday, January 10th, 2011

I watched The Wizard of Oz over the holidays this year and, as always, it’s a classic fave and a movie I’ve seen many times, but it’s been awhile since I last viewed it in its entirety.  Watching it now, I realize that Dorothy and her iconic ruby slippers definitely influenced my love of shoes early on.  It seems that no matter how many times I’ve seen the movie, Dorothy’s red heels never fail to invoke a reaction in me…I quite literally gasp the moment they land on her feet.  I mean, let’s face it, would The Wizard of Oz be the same if Dorothy had worn her plain black shoes throughout the film? Of course not.  The shoes were a star of the movie in their own right and, if they helped Dorothy wield her way through the world of Oz and get back home, surely the right shoes have the same power to help us make our way through our own lives…or at least make us look and feel more fabulous and confident while doing so, which makes all of the difference.

It’s hard to see any heel that’s red and sparkly and not draw a comparison to Dorothy and her slippers.  Look-alikes run the gamut from costume shoes to ultra-pricey versions like the Christian Louboutin Lady Lynch Glitter Strass Pump in red, but not a lot in-between.  I absolutely love the Louboutins, but the chances of me locating a pair and shelling out the cash for them are about as good as…well, being whisked off by a tornado to a fantasy land where they magically appear on my feet…so not going to happen.  But then there’s the Rachel Rachel Roy Kimi (pictured above), a style that has previously been for sale in black and pewter, but is now available in a fiery new hue.  I must say, these shoes certainly caused a reaction for me when I first saw them: they’re red and glittery and that heel…oh my!  But they’re also moderately priced and don’t come across as costumey.  Slip these on and you’ll be a totally modern-day Dorothy in no time, ready to take on the world (closing your eyes and clicking your heels three times optional).

The Rachel Roy Kimi in red is available at Macy’s for $99.  Did I mention that these are perfect Valentine’s Day shoes?

Update: Another red glitter heel option is the Enzo Angiolini Sully in red for $88.95 at Nordstrom.

Columbus Day shoe sales + shoe news

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

If you’re on the hunt for your latest pair of cute shoes, it’s definitely a good time to shop while many stores are having shoe sales for Columbus Day.  There are plenty of ways to save while shoe shopping this weekend and I’ve gathered up some of the best bargains I’ve seen so you can keep your feet fashionable and your wallet happy (which is always a win).  Plus, I’ve thrown a bit of interesting shoes news in for good measure.  Here’s what I found:

DSW was offering a free purse with a $39.95 or more order as of yesterday, but unfortunately they have already sold out.  The good news?  They are now offering $10 off a purchase of $10 or more using coupon code 7921DSW at checkout (exp 10/12) instead and you can stack it with their 920 code for 10% off and SHIPR for free shipping on $35 or more.  That cuts the price on the Moda Spana Chase Pump in leopard pictured above from $54.95 to $39.46 shipped.  All of these codes require signing into your DSW account.

Lord and Taylor takes 15% off your order using coupon code CDAY or, if you pay with a L&T credit card, CDAYPLUS (you get another 10% off that way).  They are also having a boot sale that takes 25% off one pair or 30% off two or more automatically at checkout.  When you combine the two offers, you definitely have the potential to save big.  The military-inspired Nine West Donley pictured above is normally $129.95 and drops to $96.75 in cart after 25% off, then to $82.24 after the CDAY code.

Macy’s is also having a buy more, save more sale on their selection of shoes.  Their Great Shoe Sale takes 15% off one pair, 20% off two or 30% off three or more when you enter GREATSHOES at checkout.  Shipping is also free on $99 or more.  You can find the biggest savings in clearance shoes, which are already reduced an additional 25% right now and are also eligible for the extra savings with the coupon.  For example, the Dolce Vita Cadiz mesh bootie above is marked down from $70 to $52.50 (retail $100) and is further reduced to just $36.76 after coupon.

Nine West is taking an extra 30% off select shoes and boots during their Columbus Day Sale.  The New Balance for Nine West Celestina lace sneaker above is way too cute and you can get it for $62.30 instead of $89 after the discount.  Shipping is also free.

Shoes.com takes an extra 25% off sale shoes with coupon code 25SALE until 10/11.

At Payless, buy one and get 50% off your second item during the last few days of their latest BOGO sale (exp. 10/11).  Get another 20% off your order with coupon code 30526 (exp. 10/31).

Guess takes 50% off select shoes and shipping is free.

Get an extra 25% off clearance at Aldo through 10/11 and free shipping.

Now, on to some shoe news:

A Mariah Carey shoe line is coming soon.  The singer is working with HSN on a collection of jewelry, footwear and perfume with a butterfly theme, which will be available at the end of November.

Steve Madden bought out Betsey Johnson and there’s also talk of a Katy Perry Steve Madden partnership in the works.

The world’s largest shoe department - in both physical size and the number of shoes offered for sale - opened last month at Selfridges in London.  The Shoe Galleries displays over 5,000 pairs of shoes.

She plays the ultimate shoe lover as Carrie on Sex and the City, but Sarah Jessica Parker tells In Touch magazine (in the October 4 issue) that she only owns seven pair of shoes.  If true, she must do a whole lot of borrowing from the designers for all of her fab red carpet looks (and who knew she was such a minimalist?).  On the other end of the spectrum, Kimora Lee Simmons admits to having “thousands” of shoes and closets all over the country to house her collection.

That’s all for now.  Have a great weekend!

Star Designer: Rachel Rachel Roy shoes

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Rachel Roy is known for the modern, sophisticated and feminine designs found in her high-end Rachel Roy New York line, which has been worn by Michelle Obama, Penelope Cruz, Eva Mendes, Kate Hudson and other notable celebs.  Her diffusion line Rachel Rachel Roy, launched in 2009, takes that same fashion aesthetic and makes it much more accessible and affordable.  I’ve been checking out several new fall styles from the Rachel Roy shoe collection and I’m finding that the unique details on the shoes have made them really stand out for me.  For instance, the Rachel Rachel Roy Kimi pictured below could be dismissed as just another glitter pump, but then you have to get a look at the back:

Take a sparkly shoe and add a geometric, pyramid studded heel and you definitely have something much more distinct.  This pair is priced at $99 and ships by 11/19.

Here are some more styles on my radar:

The Rachel Rachel Roy Keena has a girly, retro glam look, thanks to the floral cluster detail on the side of each shoe.  This style is priced at $150.

If you want to apply the current military trend for fall using shoes, the Rachel Rachel Roy Wava in dark green multi leather (top left) is a great way to do it.  I also love how this same boot changes personalities with the other color options available.  The black mesh version has a rocker-biker chick vibe, while the plaid version is more funky and cool.  Each are priced at $159 and will ship by 10/12.

The Rachel Rachel Roy Kaytee is another shoe that will have you making a statement - while walking away - with its lace-up, corset-like back.  It’s $99 in red, dark taupe or black and they appear to be on backorder at the Rachel Roy site until 12/10, but are also available at Macys and Shoe Woo.

I’m a fan of chain detail, which can be found along the edges of the Rachel Rachel Roy Willie ankle boot, adding a nice dose of edge.  It’s available for $179 in black leather and ships 10/4.

For even more Rachel Rachel Roy shoes, see the Rachel Roy website, Shoe Woo and Macys.  Shoe Woo is currently offering free shipping on any order, Rachel Roy has free shipping on $75 or more and Macys has free shipping on $99 with coupon code HOTLIST (exp. 9/27).
