Shoes with a pop of color for colorblocking trend

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

We’ve been checking out both neutral shoes and multicolored shoes, but there’s another breed of footwear that combines elements of both.  These shoes have a primarily neutral palette, in shades like taupe, black, white or gray, but then there’s some portion of the shoe that is played up with a nice shot of color.  I love the overall effect this provides and, although there are many ways to wear these shoes, I find it particularly relevant for the colorblocking trend we’re seeing for spring (as noted on Stylelist).  If you’re experimenting with this trend by combining various contrasting color combinations in your clothing, you might opt to incorporate just a touch of one of those shades in your shoes to bring it all together.  Or, if you’re hesitant to try colorblocking with your clothes, some of these shoes have more than one hue, meaning the trend is already built-in and ready to go with any look you choose.   I’m loving the Pelle Moda Franky (above) with a pop of bright orange, which can be found for $162 with free shipping at Lori’s Shoes or for $180 with free shipping at Shopbop.  Here are some more options, in both warm and cool shades:

Aldo Dyle rubber sole wedge with a pop of yellow for $100 at Aldo.  Coupon code 310687728 takes 10% off, making them $90 (exp 4/1/11).  Note: If you’re obsessed with those Prada rubber sole wedges (like the $695 Prada Mary Jane Wedge) but can’t shell out the big bucks for them, this is a nice alternative for much less.

Aldo Heister platform sandals with a pop of orange or yellow for $100 at  Coupon code 310687728 takes 10% off, making them $90 (exp 4/1/11).

Nine West Stylin colorblock sandals in dark pink and orange for $89 at Nine West (ships 4/26).  Shipping is also free for a limited time.

Fergie Bold heels with a pop of yellow for $99 with free shipping from  Get 20% off your order, making these $79.20, with coupon code SECRET20 (exp 3/31/11).

Madison Harding Casey wedge with a pop of yellow for $235 with free shipping from Piperlime.

Jeffrey Campbell San Diego colorblock sandals in orange and yellow for $135 at Nasty Gal.

Topshop Luminate sandals with a pop of pink for $145 with free shipping at Topshop.

Steve Madden Bellahh heels with a pop of coral on preorder for $129.95 at Steve Madden.  Get free shipping by applying SMFREESHIP at checkout.

Nine West Braxton for $99.95 at Nordstrom with free shipping via coupon code SHOES (exp 4/14/11) or for $99 with free shipping at Nine West.  This pair is also available in a yellow/orange/red combo.

Aldo Dyle again, this time in green, for $100 at  Coupon code 310687728 takes 10% off, making them $90 (exp 4/1/11).

N.Y.L.A. Daron in turquoise for $84.95 at DSW.  DSW Rewards members can apply GETFAVES at checkout for $15 off $74, $30 off $149 or $50 off $199 (exp 4/4/11).  That makes this pair $69.95.

Find My Shoes: Jimmy Choo Quinze lookalike

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

I received an email from fellow shoe lover Rebecca, who is on the hunt for a lower-priced version of the Jimmy Choo Quinze, which can be found for $1,795 at Nordstrom in nude and for the same price at Jimmy Choo in black.  This is an absolutely gorgeous shoe, but it’s definitely a toughie to find anything that compares to it and I had to put my magic shoe wand on full throttle to find anything that even comes close.  So, are there inexpensive alternatives for the Quinze?  Unfortunately, after doing an extensive search I didn’t see any mesh, crystal-adorned booties for less.  That doesn’t mean we won’t see an inspired-by version at some point (I’ll update this post if I see one), but if anyone knows of something similar, please help Rebecca out.  In the meantime, I’ve found some shoes that incorporate at least some of the same elements of the Quinze and are viable options, at least for the time being:

There’s no mesh in sight, but the Badgley Mischka Forrester has a string of bling across the vamp that reminds me of the Quinze.  Get these for $215 with free overnight shipping at Endless.

Similarly, the Pelle Moda Favilla has beads and crystals running all they way up to the ankle strap.  Endless has this pair for $188.95 with free overnight shipping.

The Steve Madden Fanfair comes in black or blush and features plenty of jewels in various sizes along the t-strap.  Get it for $99.95 at with free shipping using code SMFREESHIP or for $89.96 with free shipping at Zappos.

The Boutique 9 Denya doesn’t have jewel or rhinestone detail, but it is a mesh bootie adorned with pretty flowers.  Get it for $129.95 at Shoebuy and 15% off with coupon code FIFTEEN for a limited time.

Get some serious sparkle for much less with the Celest Hana-08 for $28.50 at Urban Originals.

To get an even closer lookalike for the Quinze, you may have to take matters into your own hands…literally.  Get a plain mesh bootie, like the Aldo Schade (pictured above) for $44.98 or this super-cute tie-back mesh heel from Americlubwear for $27.99.  Add some super glue and loose rhinestones and go to town on the black piping for a creative DIY project.  I’m not quite sure how this will turn out, but it might just work for the crafty among us.

Any more suggestions for Rebecca?  Let us know in the comments!

Update: Here’s a pretty close lookalike for the black version: the Mojo Moxy Venus Pump for $79.95 at DSW.

Say “I do” in these wedding dress shoes + something blue bridal shoes

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Wedding season is coming up and, if you’re a bride-to-be planning the big day, you want everything to be just right – down to the last detail.  The pictures here are from my own wedding, which looked and felt just like a fairy tale to me and was certainly one of the best, most memorable days of my life.  All of the planning, work and preparation was totally worth it for that one special day.

Of course, the centerpiece of any wedding is THE dress, but brides need the perfect accompaniment to complete their look: a  beautiful pair of bridal shoes.  It’s always been highly popular to wear head-to-toe white and match the shoes to the gown, but I love that today’s brides are getting increasingly creative with their look – especially when adding a dose of color, like Gwen Stefani did with pink in her Dior gown and singer Pink with black in her Monique Lhuillier.  Even if you wear a classic white dress, you can always opt for a nice pop of color in your shoes in lieu of metallic and white options.  My own gown was floor-length, so my shoes didn’t really show, but of course I had to find myself a pretty heel to wear anyway:

I really did love these silver flower-adorned ankle-strap heels (sorry for the small pics) and while many of us sacrifice comfort for style from time to time, I have to admit these ended up being quite uncomfortable – even for a nice stroll down the aisle – and I ended up ditching them during the reception for a pair of sequined blue flip flops.  There’s no harm in doing something like that if your dream wedding shoe is less than comfy, but here’s a word of advice: Don’t forget (like I did) to walk around in your shoes before the wedding, break them in a bit and bring a back-up if you don’t think you can dance (or walk) the night away in them.

As it turns out, I wore my wedding shoes only once and then my sister wore them for her own wedding a few years later as her “Something Borrowed” item.  So far, they seem to have brought us both plenty of luck and happiness!

Now, let’s look at some currently available wedding shoe options in a wide variety of styles and price points for anyone planning their own bridal look (or for brides who may need a little shoe inspiration!).  I think these bridal shoes will make the very first step into married life completely gorgeous:
