Shoes of the strange for Halloween, revisited

Friday, October 29th, 2010

*Note: This is a repost of an article I did last year around this time, but I’m still so fascinated by these wicked cool shoes that I had to post it again.  I think these shoes are perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit!*

Happy Halloween to everyone!  In celebration of Halloween, I have been on the hunt for some highly unusual shoes.  Some are just very unique, some are a little bit creepy and some might just give you the heebie-jeebies.  Many of these I found at Virtual Shoe Museum, which is an amazing site full of all kinds of fantastic shoes, especially in their Extreme shoes section.  So, let’s take a look:

These Merryl Tielman shoes definitely take the prize for Ultimate Halloween Shoes.  Can you imagine wearing these?  They would take your costume to a whole different level.

Here’s a bat-like Bertrand LandrO pair.

Another one by Bertrand LandrO

Yikes!  This Bart Hess creation is kind of spooky.

Another one by Bart Hess, which is reminiscent of a large tumor growing off the foot.  A freaky science experiment gone wrong, perhaps?

Besides the zipper, these Iris Schieferstein horse boots are very realistic…maybe too realistic.

Wow, a super-high, wool-covered sweater platform.  You don’t see that everyday.  This one is by Simone Memel.

On a similar note, the world’s highest heels are 16 inches with an 11 inch platform.  Anyone want to take a stab at walking in these?

I saw these on Oddee.com and they definitely gave me the creepie-crawlies.

The most expensive shoes in the world are these size 4 ruby slippers made by Harry Winston for the 50th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.  The shoes took 2 months to make and have as many as 4,600 rubies.  They are valued at 3 million.

Trick or treat?  If you prefer a treat, check out these chocolate shoes I saw at ThisNext.  It looks like they are no longer available, but they do look sooo good. Update: You can get these at Gayle’s Chocolate for $40 each and more color options are also available.  Yum!

The world’s largest shoes are from Marikina City in the Philippines, which is known as the shoe capital of the country.  It’s also the home of the world’s largest shoe collection from former first lady Imelda Marcos, who is said to have owned as many as 3,400 pairs (she says it was 1,060).  Over 800 of her shoes are housed at the Marikina Shoe Museum.  This was the area hit hard by tropical storm Ketsana and the museum was immersed in knee-deep water, but museum employees saved the 100 pairs that got wet, moving them to higher shelves.

The world’s smallest shoe is from China and is the size of a grain of rice.

Ever seen a Nike coffin?  Yeah, I haven’t either.  This highly unusual item is from Ghana, where coffins are “often hand carved in the shapes of various objects representing the life of the person who will be buried in them. A fisherman man be buried inside a fish, or a shoemaker inside a shoe.”

A few pain-inducing shoes found on toxel.com, especially the nail heel in the center.

That’s all for now.  Have a very spooky day!

Columbus Day shoe sales + shoe news

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

If you’re on the hunt for your latest pair of cute shoes, it’s definitely a good time to shop while many stores are having shoe sales for Columbus Day.  There are plenty of ways to save while shoe shopping this weekend and I’ve gathered up some of the best bargains I’ve seen so you can keep your feet fashionable and your wallet happy (which is always a win).  Plus, I’ve thrown a bit of interesting shoes news in for good measure.  Here’s what I found:

DSW was offering a free purse with a $39.95 or more order as of yesterday, but unfortunately they have already sold out.  The good news?  They are now offering $10 off a purchase of $10 or more using coupon code 7921DSW at checkout (exp 10/12) instead and you can stack it with their 920 code for 10% off and SHIPR for free shipping on $35 or more.  That cuts the price on the Moda Spana Chase Pump in leopard pictured above from $54.95 to $39.46 shipped.  All of these codes require signing into your DSW account.

Lord and Taylor takes 15% off your order using coupon code CDAY or, if you pay with a L&T credit card, CDAYPLUS (you get another 10% off that way).  They are also having a boot sale that takes 25% off one pair or 30% off two or more automatically at checkout.  When you combine the two offers, you definitely have the potential to save big.  The military-inspired Nine West Donley pictured above is normally $129.95 and drops to $96.75 in cart after 25% off, then to $82.24 after the CDAY code.

Macy’s is also having a buy more, save more sale on their selection of shoes.  Their Great Shoe Sale takes 15% off one pair, 20% off two or 30% off three or more when you enter GREATSHOES at checkout.  Shipping is also free on $99 or more.  You can find the biggest savings in clearance shoes, which are already reduced an additional 25% right now and are also eligible for the extra savings with the coupon.  For example, the Dolce Vita Cadiz mesh bootie above is marked down from $70 to $52.50 (retail $100) and is further reduced to just $36.76 after coupon.

Nine West is taking an extra 30% off select shoes and boots during their Columbus Day Sale.  The New Balance for Nine West Celestina lace sneaker above is way too cute and you can get it for $62.30 instead of $89 after the discount.  Shipping is also free.

Shoes.com takes an extra 25% off sale shoes with coupon code 25SALE until 10/11.

At Payless, buy one and get 50% off your second item during the last few days of their latest BOGO sale (exp. 10/11).  Get another 20% off your order with coupon code 30526 (exp. 10/31).

Guess takes 50% off select shoes and shipping is free.

Get an extra 25% off clearance at Aldo through 10/11 and free shipping.

Now, on to some shoe news:

A Mariah Carey shoe line is coming soon.  The singer is working with HSN on a collection of jewelry, footwear and perfume with a butterfly theme, which will be available at the end of November.

Steve Madden bought out Betsey Johnson and there’s also talk of a Katy Perry Steve Madden partnership in the works.

The world’s largest shoe department - in both physical size and the number of shoes offered for sale - opened last month at Selfridges in London.  The Shoe Galleries displays over 5,000 pairs of shoes.

She plays the ultimate shoe lover as Carrie on Sex and the City, but Sarah Jessica Parker tells In Touch magazine (in the October 4 issue) that she only owns seven pair of shoes.  If true, she must do a whole lot of borrowing from the designers for all of her fab red carpet looks (and who knew she was such a minimalist?).  On the other end of the spectrum, Kimora Lee Simmons admits to having “thousands” of shoes and closets all over the country to house her collection.

That’s all for now.  Have a great weekend!

Shoe Trends Fall 2010: A salute to military inspired shoes

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Whenever we usher in a new season, we always see various opinions on what’s “in” right now.  But, one trend that is undeniably huge for fall is military inspired fashion.  We’re seeing military looks everywhere and the best thing about this latest craze is that it can be applied in so many different ways.  You can draw inspiration from the huge variety of military styles seen throughout the years - modern or retro - and opt to go for a literal or a more subtle interpretation of the look.  For shoes, think structured and streamlined with multiple buckles, lug soles, brass buttons, lace-up detail and similar adornments in colors like olive, tan and navy.  Of course, you can always mix it up with some pretty, girly details, like the Kardashians by Bebe Eva does above.  The olive color, lace-up front and star studs convey a military influence, but the super-high heel and shiny metallic ankle cuff add a nice dose of glam.  You can get it at Bebe for $228 and it also comes in black.  Here are some more styles I’ve been taking a look at:

Boutiqe 9 Olita in black for $230 at Nine West or in gray for $230 at Piperlime.  The jagged sole is definitely similar to many Camilla Skovgaard styles.

The 80%20 Bernie for $198 at Karmaloop.  Coupon code SAVE20 takes 20% off and gives free shipping (expiration unknown) and that drops the price to $158.40.

The Very Volatile Warrior for $90 with free shipping at Piperlime.

Guess Owens for $138.95 with free 2-day shipping at Endless.  It comes in navy, red, black or gray.

Steve Madden Biing in taupe or black for $149.95 at Steve Madden.  Get free shipping with coupon code SMFREESHIP at checkout.

Seychelles Romance for $140 at Karmaloop.  Coupon code SAVE20 takes 20% off and gives free shipping (expiration unknown), making them $112.

Nine West Buren for $138.95 with free 2-day shipping at Endless.  It also comes in black and dark brown.

Bamboo Humble 05 OTK boot for $46.50 at LuLu’s.

For even more options, check out the military shoe picks at Shoes.com, Piperlime and Steve Madden.

New fall shoes from H by Halston at Bakers

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

I’ve been checking out the latest H by Halston shoes at Bakers and, I must say, they are offering some really cute, on-trend styles for fall at prices that won’t totally break the bank.  The line, which is exclusive to Bakers, is a collaboration with design house Halston and it was launched in May of this year.  The H by Halston Stella was the first style produced and it closely replicates the look of Sarah Jessica Parker’s gold, crystal-encrusted Christian Louboutin heels from Sex and the City 2, which she wore with a $325 white Halston Heritage dress.  That was one of the standout looks of the movie and the SATC connection makes even more sense considering Sarah Jessica Parker took on a design role with Halston for their Halston Heritage label earlier this year.  The H by Halston Stella is still available for $79.95 in gold, silver and multi glitter and in brown, white and black leather, but let’s take a look at the new styles for fall:

This is the H by Halston Maria, which appears to be inspired by the Isabel Marant Otway.  There have been plenty of knockoffs and lookalikes for this particular style from the likes of Jeffrey Campbell and Rosegold, but I like the tall, skinny heel (over 5 inches!) and the higher studded shaft of this version, which is priced at $139.95.

The H by Halston Naomi is an ever-versatile platform pump with stud detail that could quickly become a go-to staple in anyone’s shoe collection.  It also has a super-high, over 5″ heel, but the 1.5″ platform helps to balance it out.  I like the tan distressed leather version, but it also comes in silver or black, each for $89.95.

The H by Halston Beverly has a silhouette we’ve been seeing a lot of lately.  It’s a cutout wedge style with a sprinkling of small studs on the heel.  I think the green version is a great color for fall, but it also comes in black or brown.  It’s priced at $89.95.

The H by Halston Gloria combines a glitter platform with a satin upper for a distinctive dressy look.  The style pictured above is a taupe/blush version, called “Ice”, with a multi-colored glitter heel.  You can also get it in black, pewter or gold for $79.95 each.

The H by Halston Liza is an over-the-knee boot in suede.  While there are certainly a lot of over-the-knee boot options out there, the unique decorative metal detail on the heel of this pair helps it stand out:

This one is priced at $169.95 in black or taupe.

These are some of my faves, but you can see even more H by Halston styles over at Bakers.
