Shoes of the strange for Halloween, revisited

Friday, October 29th, 2010

*Note: This is a repost of an article I did last year around this time, but I’m still so fascinated by these wicked cool shoes that I had to post it again.  I think these shoes are perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit!*

Happy Halloween to everyone!  In celebration of Halloween, I have been on the hunt for some highly unusual shoes.  Some are just very unique, some are a little bit creepy and some might just give you the heebie-jeebies.  Many of these I found at Virtual Shoe Museum, which is an amazing site full of all kinds of fantastic shoes, especially in their Extreme shoes section.  So, let’s take a look:

These Merryl Tielman shoes definitely take the prize for Ultimate Halloween Shoes.  Can you imagine wearing these?  They would take your costume to a whole different level.

Here’s a bat-like Bertrand LandrO pair.

Another one by Bertrand LandrO

Yikes!  This Bart Hess creation is kind of spooky.

Another one by Bart Hess, which is reminiscent of a large tumor growing off the foot.  A freaky science experiment gone wrong, perhaps?

Besides the zipper, these Iris Schieferstein horse boots are very realistic…maybe too realistic.

Wow, a super-high, wool-covered sweater platform.  You don’t see that everyday.  This one is by Simone Memel.

On a similar note, the world’s highest heels are 16 inches with an 11 inch platform.  Anyone want to take a stab at walking in these?

I saw these on Oddee.com and they definitely gave me the creepie-crawlies.

The most expensive shoes in the world are these size 4 ruby slippers made by Harry Winston for the 50th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.  The shoes took 2 months to make and have as many as 4,600 rubies.  They are valued at 3 million.

Trick or treat?  If you prefer a treat, check out these chocolate shoes I saw at ThisNext.  It looks like they are no longer available, but they do look sooo good. Update: You can get these at Gayle’s Chocolate for $40 each and more color options are also available.  Yum!

The world’s largest shoes are from Marikina City in the Philippines, which is known as the shoe capital of the country.  It’s also the home of the world’s largest shoe collection from former first lady Imelda Marcos, who is said to have owned as many as 3,400 pairs (she says it was 1,060).  Over 800 of her shoes are housed at the Marikina Shoe Museum.  This was the area hit hard by tropical storm Ketsana and the museum was immersed in knee-deep water, but museum employees saved the 100 pairs that got wet, moving them to higher shelves.

The world’s smallest shoe is from China and is the size of a grain of rice.

Ever seen a Nike coffin?  Yeah, I haven’t either.  This highly unusual item is from Ghana, where coffins are “often hand carved in the shapes of various objects representing the life of the person who will be buried in them. A fisherman man be buried inside a fish, or a shoemaker inside a shoe.”

A few pain-inducing shoes found on toxel.com, especially the nail heel in the center.

That’s all for now.  Have a very spooky day!

Blend your Trends: Leopard + OTK boot = Sam Edelman James

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

If you like to follow trends, you know that leopard print is kind of a big deal right now.  Leopard has long had its place in fashion and animal prints are always around, but it’s been bigger than ever this fall and we’ve been seeing it everywhere.  Another ongoing trend that’s been popular for the last year or so is wearing over-the-knee boots, a style that’s typically known for being overtly sexy, but has adapted quite readily into everyday wear.  It’s always fun to follow the latest trends and show the world you know what’s up, but giving in to every fashion whim can definitely hit the wallet pretty hard.  That’s why it makes sense to combine your trends and get more bang for your buck.  The Sam Edelman James boot does just that and combines the leopard and OTK trends seamlessly.  While they are daring, the flat heel tones it down a bit, although I’d still wear them with something somewhat understated to get the ideal effect.  You can get these shoes at Karmaloop for $275 and apply coupon code SAVE20 to reduce them to $220 with free shipping.  For the black or “putty” color options, see Piperlime, Bloomingdales, Shopbop, Endless or Zappos.

All Jeweled Up: Haus of Price shoes with gem heels

Monday, October 25th, 2010

It’s completely natural to be drawn to sparkly, shiny things and I guess that’s why my eyes went straight to these jewel-toned Haus of Price shoes while browsing the new styles over at Solestruck.  At first glance, I thought the ever-evolving Jeffrey Campbell Tick had gone technicolor on us – the overall look is actually quite similar – but this is the Haus of Price Solid Goddess in red, green or blue and the detail on the heel is the result of gems rather than tacks.  With the holidays coming up, I’m thinking these might be the perfect way to spice up a LBD or even add some bling to a pair of jeans.  Each are priced at $239.95 at Solestruck and, if you love them, but can’t decide on just one color, you’re sure to go crazy for the multicolored styles from the same brand:

Haus of Price Multi Gem Arch Heel for $239.95.

Haus of Price Multi Gem Pump for $239.95 (Only 1 size left right now.  Sigh.  Tear.).

I think I’ll take them all, but if I can’t cough up $240 for just one before they all sell out, I suppose I’ll have to learn to wield a BeDazzler on an unsuspecting pair of pumps.  That should be interesting.

Order any of these shoes at Solestruck and you’ll also get free shipping on your order.

Update: Karmaloop now has the Haus of Price Goddess in green for $230 and coupon code SAVE20 takes 20% off and gives free shipping, which drops the price to $184.  They also have this style:

The Haus of Price Pearly White Booties, which are $230 before coupon and $184 after.

Update 2: Here’s another Haus of Price style, now in cage form.  This is the Haus of Price Cage Wedge in multi gem and it’s available for $228 at Karmaloop.

Sale Spotlight: 25% off shoes at Lord & Taylor for Friends & Family sale

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

I love a good Friends and Family sale and I also love the shoes at Lord & Taylor, which works out quite well considering L&T is having such a sale and taking 25% off both regular and sale items via coupon code FRIENDS.  Of course, that includes their wide selection of drool-worthy women’s shoes and I’m seeing way too many styles I want right now at great prices.  For instance, L.A.M.B. shoes are known to be quite pricey, but the L.A.M.B. Glamorous bootie pictured above is on sale for $209.99 and is further reduced to $157.49 after the coupon.  That’s quite a markdown from the retail price of $295 and lower than what other stores are offering at the moment.  Here are some more of my faves:

Plenty by Tracy Reese Piper for $149 before discount and $111.75 after.  Also available in black.  Update: Piperlime has a better price for this pair – $99.99 in black or brown and free shipping.  The sale price may end 10/24/10.

Dolce Vita Holt in black or grey on sale for $99.59 (retail $159) and $74.69 after coupon.

Steven by Steve Madden Maiya on sale for $129.99 (retail $189) and $97.49 after coupon.  Also available in black.

Calvin Klein Rayven on sale for $129.99 (retail $159) and $97.49 after coupon.

Poetic Licence Encoure on sale for $100.08 (retail $139) and $75.06 after coupon.  Also available in black.

Shipping is free on $150 or more and the sale ends 10/24/10.  Some exclusions apply.

Jessica Simpson in leopard Christian Louboutin Miss Fast Plato shoes + a lookalike for less

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Jessica Simpson has had her share of fashion hits and misses, but I must say I love the look of the leopard shoes she wore on September 8 while leaving her hotel in NYC, seen here on the website of Ok! Magazine (more photos available there).  Jessica’s walk on the wild side is courtesy of Christian Louboutin and his Miss Fast Plato in leopard, which is available at Barney’s for $1,095 (only 1 size currently left).  We’ve seen a lot of leopard in fashion lately, but what makes this bootie stand out is the deep cut down the vamp of the shoe and the super-high 5+ inch heel.  But, it’s also good timing for me because lately I’ve been intrigued by a similar shoe and it always helps to check out how someone else wears the look.

The pair I’ve had my eye on is the Irregular Choice Bangers and Mash in leopard and it definitely isn’t what you’d call a knockoff for the Louboutin bootie – it’s a bit more casual with its lower heel and platform and it has a tiered wooden heel that adds a funky, off-beat touch – but it does feature the same super-low cut down the front and it’s a viable alternative for those who want a less expensive (or more quirky) alternative.  You can get the Irregular Choice pair at Karmaloop for $150 and apply coupon code SAVE20 to get 20% off and free shipping, which reduces the price to $130 shipped.  The expiration of the coupon is unknown.

Update: I found a couple more options that don’t have the super-low cut down the front, but do have the 5+ inch height of the Louboutins and leopard print:

Luichiny Now or Never leopard bootie for $64.99 with free shipping at Amazon.

Rock & Republic Angie in leopard for $239.20 with free shipping at Amazon.

15% off LuLu’s coupon: Save on Jeffrey Campbell K-Genius knockoff & more cute shoes

Friday, October 15th, 2010

LuLu’s doesn’t offer coupons all that often, but this weekend they are celebrating their CEO’s birthday by giving their customers a discount.  You can get 15% off your order by applying coupon code CEO-SALE during checkout, plus shipping is free on $75 or more.  That takes a nice bite off the prices of their selection of fun and trendy shoes – many of which are designer-inspired – as well as the Jeffrey Campbell styles they offer.  If you like the buckled up look of the Jeffrey Campbell K-Genius in grey (above, left), you can get it for $130.90 after the coupon, but it’s practically sold out.  However, they also offer the lookalike Privileged Kyoko in black (above, right) for much less at $39.95 after the code.  They have it in olive too, but only a few sizes are left.  Here are a couple more styles I noticed:

Dolce Vita Marilyn knockoff, the Charles Albert New 1769 in black for $49.30 after discount.

The Mixx Amparo 02 champagne mesh pump with rhinestone studded heel for $34.85 after discount.

See the entire selection of shoes at LuLu’s for many more options.  The coupon expires tomorrow, 10/16/10.
